Here are 23 signs that may be associated with kidney problems: 1. Constant Fatigue Reduced kidney function can contribute to anemia because the kidneys produce erythropoietin, a hormone that helps stimulate red blood cell production. Anemia may cause tiredness, weakness, and reduced energy. 2. Trouble Sleeping People with kidney disease may experience sleep problems. Changes in body chemistry, itching, muscle discomfort, or conditions such as sleep apnea can contribute to disturbed sleep. 3. Dry or Itchy Skin Advanced kidney disease can cause dry, itchy skin. Changes in mineral and phosphorus balance may contribute to persistent itching. 4. Frequent Nighttime Urination Waking up frequently to urinate, known as nocturia, can occur with kidney disease. However, it can also have many other causes, including an enlarged prostate, diabetes, or urinary tract problems. 5. Foamy Urine Persistent or unusually foamy urine can sometimes indicate excess protein in the urine (proteinuria), which may be a sign of kidney damage. 6. Unexplained Weight Loss Unintentional weight loss can occur with serious or advanced illness, including kidney disease, particularly when nausea and loss of appetite are present. Nausea and Vomiting Nausea and vomiting can occur when kidney function becomes severely impaired and waste products accumulate in the bloodstream. 20. Bad Breath Advanced kidney disease can cause a distinctive ammonia-like or urine-like odor to the breath because of elevated urea levels. 21. Decreased Urine Output A significant decrease in urine production can occur with acute kidney injury or severe kidney dysfunction. A sudden reduction in urine output requires prompt medical assessment. 22. Dark or Bloody Urine Blood in the urine can make it appear pink, red, or cola-colored. When to Seek Urgent Medical Care Seek prompt medical attention for symptoms such as sudden severe reduction in urine output, visible blood in the urine, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, or severe swelling.
