When is it best to consult a dermatologist?
Not all white or reddish patches on the skin are caused by pityriasis versicolor. Pigmentation changes can have numerous causes and, in some cases, require a dermatological evaluation.
It is advisable to consult a doctor if the spots are new and persistent, spread rapidly, change in appearance, or are accompanied by intense itching, pain, inflammation, or other symptoms.
A dermatological examination allows for the evaluation of the appearance of the lesions and, when necessary, for further tests to distinguish pityriasis versicolor from other skin conditions.
Protect your skin during the summer
Regardless of the cause of the spots, it is important to use adequate sunscreen when exposed to the sun, applying it in sufficient quantity and renewing it according to the product’s instructions, especially after swimming or heavy sweating.
If white or reddish spots appear after sun exposure, it’s best not to automatically dismiss them as simply a result of tanning. Pityriasis versicolor is one possible cause, but only a medical evaluation can more accurately determine the origin of the skin changes and determine the most appropriate treatment.
