How to Stop Maggots From Taking Over Your Trash Bin

Few household problems are as unpleasant as opening a trash bin and finding maggots. While it can be alarming, maggots are a common problem during warm weather and are usually easy to eliminate and prevent.

Why Do Maggots Appear?

Maggots are the larvae of houseflies or other flies. Adult flies lay eggs on decaying organic matter such as meat scraps, dairy products, or overripe fruit. In warm, moist conditions, the eggs can hatch within 8 to 24 hours.

To prevent maggots, reduce three things that attract flies:

  • Food waste
  • Moisture
  • Access to the trash

Step 1: Get Rid of Maggots

If maggots are already present, try one of these methods:

Boiling Water

Carefully pour boiling water into the trash bin to kill the maggots. This is one of the quickest and most effective methods.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix equal parts white vinegar and hot water, then add a generous handful of salt. Pour the mixture over the affected area. The vinegar and salt can help kill maggots and loosen debris before cleaning.

Safety Tips

  • Wear rubber gloves while cleaning.
  • Dispose of the trash bag immediately in an outdoor garbage bin.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the bin.
