I discovered this hidden in a crack in my sofa… please don’t tell me these are bed bugs.

Size and Shape

  • How big is it? (For example: sesame seed, apple seed, or grain of rice?)
  • What shape is it? (Oval, round, elongated?)
  • Is it flat or more rounded?

Color

  • What color is it? (Reddish-brown, tan, white, black, translucent?)

Movement

  • Is it moving or stationary?
  • Did you find just one, or several?

Other Clues

  • Are there any dark spots, shed skins, or tiny eggs nearby?
  • Have you noticed any itchy bites on your skin?

Common Things Found in Sofa Cracks

It could be bed bugs if:

  • They’re reddish-brown, oval, flat, and about the size of an apple seed.
  • You find tiny black fecal spots that look like ink dots.
  • You have itchy red bites, often in lines or clusters.
  • You see tiny white eggs or shed skins.

But it could also be:

  • Carpet beetle larvae (fuzzy, brown or tan, elongated)
  • Cockroach nymphs (darker and fast-moving)
  • Spider egg sacs (white, round, and silky)
  • Fabric fibers, crumbs, or pet hair
  • Booklice (tiny and pale)
